This flute is a prime example of Powell flutes made after Verne Q sold his company to four of his disciples in 1961. When it was made, the workshop was still located at its original premises on Huntington Avenue, Boston. In 1970, it was expanded and relocated to Arlington Heights. The following year, Edward Alemeida, one of the original four owners, left to establish his own flute company. Many consider Powell flutes of the 1960s Almeida period Powells because of Almeida's exceptional craftmanship as demonstrate by the later flutes bearing his name.
Powell #3145 is in lovely used condition, showing some tarnish. The Straubinger pads are older but covering well, and the action is light and quick, no dents. It produces a robust, resonant tone characteristic of vintage Powell flutes, with a quick, responsive, and open sound across all three octaves. The flute vibrates under your fingers, a sign of good acoustics, magic that you can feel. Vintage Powell flutes are true workhorses, built for everyday professional use. It will stand the test of time for another 50 years. The original combination case is in well-used condition.
