Powell Flute #1831, made in

In 1957, Powell experienced
his most productive year, delivering over 120 instruments. The following year,
in 1958, there was only a slight decline in output. Despite being nearly 80 years
old, Powell was long passed retirement age. His departure occurred in 1961, and
he entrusted his company to the four craftsmen he had mentored since 1945. The
flutes from this period epitomize Powell's lifetime achievement, serving as
precursors to the modern flute. The primary goal was to produce a headjoint
that delivers a more powerful sound while meeting the aesthetic standards of
that era.
Powell #1831 is well-used and
in decent condition, some tarnish, mechanism is still tight - a sign of a prior
overhaul well-done. The Straubinger pads are leaking, a repad with felt pads
would be recommended. In the current condition, the flute is fine for casual
playing. The headjoint is very strong and makes the flute vibrate despite the
leaks in the pads. The flute produces a brilliant tone that is not thin, with
an easy high register, a lovely middle range, and rich, colorful low notes. It
comes in its original case in well-used condition.
Maker’s mark on all three joints, serial number on body only.
The embouchure hole measures 10.5 x 12.2 mm.
Sounding length is 637 mm.
Headjoint length is 8-7/8”.
The flute weighs 424 grams.
