Marigaux was a member of SML
(Strasser, Marigaux, Lemaire), founded in 1935. They gained renown for
acquiring Louis Lot in 1951. Jules Marigaux was born in 1883 and received
training at Buffet-Crampon where his father was "premier ouvrier"
(foreman). Presently, Marigaux continues to thrive as a highly regarded oboe
manufacturer.
Marigaux #1286 is a very
special flute. It is very light and has a big, beautiful, and clear voice, very
vibrant. The pads are quite old, but the flute is still playing well down to
the low D. The C and C# pads would need to be replaced in order to play the
full range. The mechanism is in fair condition for casual playing. The
headjoint ring was moved up 1/8" and the tenon was probably shortened by
the same amount. There is much tarnish, but the plating is very good. It comes
in the original French case in well-used condition.
Maker's marks on headjoint and body. Serial number on body only.
