Louis Lot Flute #9458, made
in 1925, the same year as Dufrene’s Louis Lot #9402 when G. Chambille was the
owner of the workshop. This instrument was originally owned by Herbert Benkman,
who served as the principal flute from 1924 to 1925 and piccolo from 1925 to
1961 with the San Francisco Symphony.
Our flute is in excellent
condition, ready to play. It was overhauled by Ted Thiele in California. The
pad retainers have been modernized and the grommets replaced with delrin ones.
This flute had a left hand lever to operate the low C#. It was removed sometime
during its long history. The headjoint guard ring was also removed but the
tenon doesn’t seem to have been shortened. #9458 plays with a robust and fluid
sound, very beautiful. It comes in a long case in fair condition, although the
top cover is warped.
Maker’s marks are on both the headjoint and the body, serial number on headjoint only.
