Louis Lot C piccolo serial #28, made in 1934. Cylindrical silver body, solid silver keys, soldered tone holes, close hole full covered keys, inline G, Bb shake, gold springs, A=440.
Louis Lot made many wood ring-key
conical piccolos, yet cylindrical silver piccolos were extremely rare. Our
piccolo was produced during the era of G. Chambille, the final proprietor of
the Louis Lot legacy. In her book, Great Flute Makers of France: The Lot and Godfroy
Families, 1650-1900, Giannini noted that between 1931 and 1939, a mere 16
piccolos were made, all of which were assigned new serial numbers comprising
solely even numbers. Among these, only five were cylindrical piccolos, with
three being silver and two made of maillechort.
Louis Lot #28 stands out as a truly exceptional piccolo. It remains in good condition, with older pads that still cover well, a solid and tight mechanism, no dents, and only a small amount of tarnish from regular use. The tiny oval hole is expertly crafted. The instrument boasts a charming tone, effortlessly producing a clear high B, a resonant low register, and plays akin to a diminutive flute. It comes in its original case in good condition.
Maker’s mark on headjoint and body, serial number on body only.
The embouchure hole measures 8.5 x 10.6 mm.
Sounding length is 265 mm.
Headjoint length is 5-1/4”.
The piccolo weighs 150 grams.
