Louis Lot silver Flute serial
#1742, made in 1872. Solid silver, seamed tube, handmade French model, soldered
tone holes, open hole, pointed arms, no adjustment screws, inline G, C-foot, Bb
shake, .014" tubing, gold springs, felt pads, traditional scale.
A pristine, unaltered
first-generation Louis Lot flute is nearly impossible to find. Flute #1742 does
not qualify as one of those Holy Grail instruments, as reflected by its selling
price, which is only one-fourth of what a truly exceptional example would
command.
#1742 is in good condition,
some alterations were done during its 150 years of history, these include a
replacement lipplate from a later period Louis Lot, shortening of the headjoint
of about 3/8", a removable silver spacer ring is used to take up the missing length inside the barrel, conversion of B/C shake to Bb shake, extensive work done on
the ribs, inserts in the 3 footjoint tone holes, gold springs replacing steel
springs, pad washers converted to modern style washers.
Due to their rarity and
value, first-generation Louis Lot flutes often undergo extensive repair and
restoration. While #1742 has seen its share of alterations, it retains a
captivating, intimate voice that shines across all registers. The replaced
lipplate, with its small dimensions and geometry, hints at a possible
connection to the Debonneetbeau period. The mechanism was well sorted out from a
previous overhaul by Clifford Tretick. The flute comes in a French case in fair
condition.
Maker's marks are on both the
headjoint and the body, serial number on headjoint only. While the engraving on
the body has been almost entirely polished away, the logo on the headjoint,
though faded, remains decipherable with careful examination.
