Wm. S. Haynes Flute serial
#923, made in 1905. Grenadilla, silver keys and fittings, Y-arms, closed hole,
offset G, Bb shake, forged keys and touches, adjustment screws, gold springs,
C-foot with double rollers, grease case, felt pads, traditional scale.
Haynes achieved considerable
success making wooden flutes during the first quarter of the 20th century,
producing nearly 1,600 instruments over a 21-year period. Production ceased
abruptly around 1921, driven by the shift among flute players towards silver
flutes. The company did not resume wood flute production until a brief revival
in 1998, less than 20 additional flutes were made.
Haynes #923 is in
exceptionally good condition, looks like new. Both pads and mechanism have been
refurbished to factory specs. Ready to play. There is an expertly repaired
crack in the headjoint, it is barely visible. The sound is very mellow and
warm. It feels very much like how a wood flute should be - intimate, devoid of
brittleness, smoky, resonant, just full of charm. It's magical for playing
Bach. Finding another wooden Haynes flute in such pristine cosmetic and playing
condition would be an exceedingly rare endeavor. It comes in a new French case
in excellent condition.
Maker’s mark and serial number on body only. Monogram on headjoint and footjoint.
The embouchure hole measures 10.2 x 11.8 mm.
Sounding length is 606 mm.
Headjoint length is 9-1/4”.
The flute weighs 494 grams.
