Wm. S. Haynes Flute serial
#629, made in 1901. Grenadilla, silver keys and fittings, open G#, reversed
thumb keys, Y-arms, closed hole, offset G, Bb shake, forged keys and touches,
adjustment screws, gold springs, crutch, C-foot with double rollers, felt pads,
traditional scale.
This early Haynes wood flute, crafted according to Boehm’s original design, is a fascinating piece of musical history. Its unique features, such as the open G# key and reversed thumb keys, offer a glimpse into the evolution of flute design.
While #629 is currently unplayable due to a missing spring catch on a trill key, this issue can be easily addressed during a professional overhaul. In the meantime, rubber bands can provide a temporary fix. Additionally, the footjoint is missing two rib screws and has a small crack near the D# tone hole. The headjoint also has a repaired crack.
Despite these imperfections, the flute produces a warm, woody, and beautiful tone. It is evident that this instrument, with its tarnished keys and overall wear, has a rich history. The flute will require
a complete overhaul for professional use. This is an excellent opportunity to
acquire a historically important flute at a very reasonable price. It comes in
its original case in very poor condition.
