Haynes #45851

A Flute from Mary Louise Poor’s Studio

Wm. S. Haynes Flute serial #45851, made in 1980. Solid silver, handmade French model, soldered tone holes, open hole, pointed arms, no adjustment screws, offset G, B-foot, Bb shake, D# roller, .018” tubing, forged keys and touches, gold springs, felt pads, traditional scale.

This Haynes flute was made during a time when Muramatsu was gaining a foothold in the American flute market, and just two years before the Deveau scale was introduced. The slightly square embouchure on #45851 was an early sign of Haynes responding to market demand for a bigger, more contemporary sound. The headjoint on this flute, paired with a body built in Haynes’ traditional old-school style, produces a bolder and more direct sound than many of their earlier models. The tonal colors remain pleasing and varied, with a very dark character owing to the heavy body tubing, while the response is quick and easy to control.

Our flute is in good playing condition, although an overhaul is recommended for serious performance. This Haynes represents a fascinating moment between the old and the new - a crossroads at which Lewis Deveau, a longtime Haynes craftsman who became the company’s owner in 1976, stood as he contemplated the firm’s next direction. The future had not yet arrived.

It comes in its original case in good condition.

Maker’s mark and serial number on body only. Monogram on headjoint.

The embouchure hole measures 10.8 x 12.5 mm.

Sounding length is 638 mm.

Headjoint length is 8-7/8”.

The flute weighs 481 grams.
