Wm. S. Haynes Flute serial
#43778, made in 1977. Solid silver, handmade French model, soldered tone holes,
pointed arms, no adjustment screws, inline G, B-foot, Bb shake, .013” tubing,
forged keys and touches, gold springs, traditional scale, felt pads.
A remarkable Haynes flute, #43778, made one year after Lou Deveau became the proud owner of the Haynes Company, and before the introduction of the Deveau scale in 1981. Its first owner was David Colvig of the Houston Symphony. It is a fantastic playing instrument probably due to the well-cut embouchure hole, which was undoubtedly hand-picked by Colvig.
#43778 is in good used
condition. The silver has some deep tarnish from years of service. The
mechanism is still quite good. Pads are older but covering well for normal
playing. An overhaul would be recommended for professional use. The headjoint
is very responsive, a super light body also contributes to the quickness of
articulation. The sound is full and vibrant, very even because of a good
traditional scale and a well-cut embouchure. It comes in its original case in
very good condition.
Maker’s mark and serial number on body only. Monogram on headjoint.
The embouchure hole measures 10.2 x 12.1 mm.
Sounding length is 636 mm.
Headjoint length is 8-7/8”.
The flute weighs 427grams.
