Harold Bennett was probably one of the most overlooked American flute players in the 20th Century. He was a contemporary and rival of Julius Baker, a great teacher, and the principal flute of the Metropolitan Opera from 1944-1965. He was a proponent of high wall headjoints before this style of headjoints became commonplace today. Haynes made many flutes according to his specifications.

Haynes #40906 is a very robust flute. It is in well-used condition with much tarnish, pads are old, but still seal very well. It is ready to play. The flute resonates under the player’s fingers. It has a big  low register with good response, singing middle and soaring high without sounding thin or forced. The high wall headjoint gives flute a very bold and full core sound, it is pretty easy to control and even allowed the player to push some. The thin body balances the strong headjoint in the most subtle ways, making color and dynamic changes like child’s play. It comes in its original combination case in excellent condition.

Maker’s mark and serial number on body only, monogram on headjoint.

The embouchure hole measures 10.3x 12.4 mm.

Sounding length is 638 mm.

Headjoint length is 8-3/4”.

The flute weighs 429 grams.
