Wm. S. Haynes Flute serial
#30811, made in 1961, the sweet spot of the golden age period. Solid silver,
handmade French model, soldered tone holes, open hole, pointed arms, no
adjustment screws, inline G, B-foot with gizmo, Bb shake, .017” tubing, forged keys and
touches, gold springs, felt pads, traditional scale.
Haynes #30811 once belonged
to Jeanne Baxtresser when she was playing in the Toronto Symphony. It is a
Golden Age Handmade flute with a rare B-foot. The flute is in good mechanical condition,
some tarnish, the pads are covering fine for casual playing, a proper overhaul
would bring this flute to another level. The headjoint was drawn on the highly sought after #9 taper arbor. The embouchure hole is well cut, an excellent
headjoint. The sound is sweet, powerful and full of character, fast response in
all registers, the action is even and smooth. In its current condition, #30811
vibrates strongly in the hands and can take a lot of air. Flute comes in a
combination case in well-used condition. Handmade Haynes flutes from the Golden
Age period seldom surface in the market place, especially one with a B-foot and owned by a flute royalty.
Maker’s mark and serial number on body only. Monogram on headjoint.
The embouchure hole measures 10.3 x 12.1 mm.
Sounding length is 635 mm.
Headjoint length is 8-7/8”.
The flute weighs 460 grams.
