Haynes #30363

A Golden Age Handmade Haynes Flute

Wm. S. Haynes Flute serial #30363, made in 1961. Solid silver, #9 headjoint, handmade French model, soldered tone holes, open hole, pointed arms, no adjustment screws, inline G, C-foot, Bb shake, .014" tubing, forged keys and touches, gold springs, felt pads, traditional scale, A=440.

Haynes #30363 was delivered on February 1961, about 18 months after Rampal’s gold flute was made. During this period, Haynes was producing many gold and silver handmade flutes for prominent flutists. It was also the time when Powell retired, leading many loyal Powell players to search for alternative flute options. Our flute sits in the real sweet spot of golden age Haynes flutes.

Haynes #30363 is in exceptional playing condition. While it exhibits some areas of deep tarnish, the pads appear remarkably fresh, suggesting a recent repad and the pads are sealing well. The mechanism is in good condition. It plays with a sweet and singing tone in all registers, easy articulations. The flute feels light and vibrant. It comes in its original case in poor condition.

Maker’s mark and serial number on body only. Monogram on headjoint.

The embouchure hole measures 10.2 x 12.2 mm.

Sounding length is 600 mm.

Headjoint length is 8-7/8”.

The flute weighs 392 grams.
