Haynes s/n 12854

Excellent Player!

Wm. S. Haynes Flute serial #12854, made in 1935. Solid silver, handmade French model, soldered tone holes, open hole, pointed arms, no adjustment screws, inline G, C-foot, Bb shake, .016” tubing, forged keys and touches, gold springs, felt pads, traditional scale, A=440.

In 1935, Haynes had a reason to celebrate as they delivered their inaugural platinum flute to none other than George Barrere. The production volume had rebounded after the hardships of the Great Depression, marking a resurgence in hope. At this time, French model flutes in America were widely considered the standard to own and play, and #12854 symbolized this renewed optimism.

Haynes #12854 is a one-owner flute. It is in well-used, well-cared for condition. The pads are sealing very well. The current condition is fine for casual playing but will need an overhaul for use in serious performances. The sound is rich and sonorous, very vibrant under the fingers, big low register, sweet middle and effortless high notes. It comes in its original case in poor condition.

Maker’s mark and serial number on body only, monogram on headjoint.

The embouchure hole measures 10.4 x 12.1 mm.

Sounding length is 602 mm.

Headjoint length is 8-3/4”.

The flute weighs 436 grams.
