Reginald C. Aitkins rosewood
C piccolo. Two headjoints, sterling silver key work, Bb shake, gold springs,
cork pads on thumbs, C1, trills and D#, A=440.
Very little information is
available about Reginald Aitkins, mostly from word of mouth. He worked at
Haynes during the 1970s and is believed to have established his own company,
likely in the early 1980s.
Our Aitkins is a lovely
instrument. It bears a resemblance in design and construction to a Powell or
Haynes piccolo of the same era, showcasing excellent workmanship. This instrument
is in excellent condition, pads are covering well, some tarnish on the silver
keys, the wood is well aged and without any cracks. It includes two original
headjoints with slightly different shapes and sizes for the embouchure holes,
each offering a unique sound. Rosewood piccolos are typically bright and
lighter in character, and the Aitkins is no exception. It is easy to play,
producing a clear and open sound. It does not have a case.
Maker’s mark on one headjoint only.
The embouchure holes measure 9.3 x 11.1 mm and 9.5 x 11.8 mm.
Sounding length is 262 mm.
Headjoint length is 5”.
The piccolo weighs 143 grams.
