Wm. S. Haynes Flute serial
#9369, made in November, 1926. Solid silver, Regular model, Y-arms, drawn tone holes,
closed hole, offset G, Bb shake, .018”, forged keys and touches, adjustment
screws, gold springs, C-foot, felt pads, traditional scale.
Haynes #9369 was made during a
pivotal moment in the company’s history. Shortly after Verne Q. Powell departed
to start his own venture, George Haynes returned to guide the destiny of Haynes
Flutes. This period, marked by intense competition with their former star
flutemaker, is sometimes considered the first golden age of Haynes. (see article:
Gold Powell Flute #60) The
exceptional sound quality of flute #9369 is a testament to this era.
Our flute is in good
condition. The pads are old but covering adequately for casual playing. A
complete overhaul is recommended for professional use. It its current
condition, it still plays with a beautiful core sound, full of colors and very
vibrant, evident from the exquisite headjoint and embouchure hole, possibly the
work of George Haynes. A minor dent on the lipplate has no impact on
playability. The hard to find accessories include one silver tenon cap,
cleaning rod with screwdriver, silver grease case with Haynes monogram, and its
original case in fair condition.
Maker’s mark and serial number on body only. Monogram on headjoint.
The embouchure hole measures 10.2 x 12.2 mm.
Sounding length is 602 mm.
Headjoint length is 9-1/8”.
The flute weighs 457 grams.
