Haynes s/n 46322

Handmade French B-foot

Wm. S. Haynes Flute serial #46322, made in 1981. Solid silver, handmade French model, soldered tone holes, open hole, pointed arms, no adjustment screws, inline G, B-foot, Bb shake, .013” tubing, forged keys and touches, gold springs, felt pads, traditional scale, A=440.

Haynes #46322 is one of the last flutes produced before the introduction of the Deveau scale. It is a fantastic player. The sound has a captivating and vibrant quality, rich and ringing. The pads are quite worn and the mechanism will need refreshing. Even in this condition, the flute is very resonant. It has a full low register, singing middle and beautiful high. The headjoint was drawn on the highly desirable #9 arbor. The embouchure is well cut and gives the flute a core sound and quick response. Some tarnish and no dents. While the flute can be played as is, an overhaul would be needed for concert performance. The original case is in fair usable condition.

Maker’s mark and serial number on body only, monogram on headjoint.

The embouchure hole measures 10.4 x 12.3 mm.

Sounding length is 638 mm.

Headjoint length is 8-7/8”.

The flute weighs 437 grams.
