Wm. S. Haynes Flute serial #31436, made in 1962. Solid silver, handmade French model, inline G, B-foot, Bb shake, forged keys and touches, soldered tone holes, gold springs, headjoint drawn on the highly sought after #9 arbor.
#31436 is a very good example of the golden age period handmade flutes from the Wm. S. Haynes Company. It is constructed with ultra thin silver tubing, measuring between 0.011” and 0.012”. The flute feels very light but the sound is robust. Fast response in all registers, powerful low notes, singing high notes. It is in good condition, the pads are older but seal well, the action is smooth, some tarnish from normal use. Original case in fair condition. This is a very special flute and not many flutemakers then and especially now are willing or know how to produce proper thin flutes.
Maker’s mark and serial number on body only, monogram on headjoint.
The embouchure hole measures 10.34 x 12.12 mm.
Sounding length is 710 mm.
Headjoint length is 8-7/8”.
The flute weighs 403 grams.
