Wm. S. Haynes Flute serial #18690, made in 1947. Solid silver, handmade, closed hole, soldered tone holes, pointed arms, no adjustment screws, offset G, C-foot, Bb shake, .013” tubing, forged keys and touches, gold springs.
Closed hole handmade Haynes flutes are much more uncommon than their open hole siblings. A thin flute from this period is particularly rare. #18690 is in excellent condition, recent overhaul, no dents, a few light scratches from use. This flute has the magic of the Haynes sound, all the registers are even and strong, fast response, full low register and sublime high, perhaps all ascribable to the #7 headjoint and a well cut embouchure hole. Flute comes in a French student case.
Maker’s mark and serial number on body only, monogram on headjoint.
The embouchure hole measures 10.39 x 12.09 mm.
Sounding length is 600 mm.
Headjoint length is 8-7/8”.
The flute weighs 391 grams.
